MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers Undergraduate, Japanese Studies and Research Student Scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

Notes:
- Use the guide and forms for the scholarship year for which you are applying. They are subject to change each year.
- For any questions on the application documents, where you are allowed to answer in Japanese, please also include an English translation.
- Applications are only accepted at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate General in the country where the applicant has citizenship (i.e. Japanese Embassy/Consulate's General in Canada can only accept applications from Canadian citizens.). Send your completed application to your nearest Embassy or Consulate General of Japan.
General Overview
Undergraduate Scholarship (Deadline: Application Received by May 31, 2024)
For students who wish to complete an undergraduate degree at a Japanese University.
Details and application guidelines (including eligibility requirements) and forms for the 2025 scholarship are available through the Study in Japan website.
Generally, application forms are available in April or May, each year with a deadline in May or early June. All eligible applicants will be invited for an interview and examination to be held in June or July on a date and time determined by the Consulate General of Japan. Interviews and examinations must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan’s offices.

Japanese Studies Scholarship (Application Closed)
For undergraduate university students interested in deepening their understanding of Japanese language, culture and affairs. The scholarship aims to promote mutual understanding and friendly ties between Japan and other countries.
For reference only, application guidelines (including eligibility requirements) and forms for the 2024 Japanese Studies Scholarship are available through the Study in Japan website.
Generally, application forms are available in January, each year with a deadline in February or early March. All eligible applicants will be invited for an interview and Japanese language examination in February or Marchon a date and time determined by the Consulate General of Japan. Interviews and examinations must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan’s offices..

Research Student Scholarship (Deadline: Application Received by May 8, 2024)
For university graduates who wish to complete a Master's or PhD at a university in Japan. The research study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied or a related field.
Application guidelines (including eligibility requirements) and forms for the 2025 scholarship are available through the Study in Japan website.
Generally, application forms are available in April or May, each year with a deadline in late May.
Applicants who successfully passes the written application screening are required to undertake an interview and examination (English and Japanese language) to be held in mid to late June on a date and time determined by the Consulate General of Japan. Interviews and examinations must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan’s offices.
