MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers Undergraduate, Japanese Studies and Research Student Scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

Call for Applications:

COVID-19 Advisory: Due to the measures being taken in Japan and Canada, and the changing nature of the situation, the selection process may be cancelled or scholarship recipients may be unable to travel to Japan in the future, even after the selection of recipients has been announced.
 

  • 2022 Undergraduate Scholarship (Deadline: Application Received by June 4, 2021)

    Candidate interviews will be held in July 2021, on a date and time determined by the Consulate General of Japan. Due to COVID-19, the process for the interviews will be announced at a later date. Normally, interviews must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan’s offices.

  • 2022 Research Student Scholarship (Deadline: Application Received by May 12, 2021)

    Candidate interviews will be held in late June or early July 2021, on a date and time determined by the Consulate General of Japan. Due to COVID-19, the process for the interviews will be announced at a later date. Normally, interviews must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan’s offices.

Notes:
  • Use the guide and forms for the scholarship year for which you are applying. They are subject to change each year.
  • For any questions on the application documents, where you are allowed to answer in Japanese, please also include an English translation.
  • Applications are only accepted at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate General in the country where the applicant has citizenship (i.e. Japanese Embassy/Consulate's General in Canada can only accept applications from Canadian citizens.). Send your completed application to your nearest Embassy or Consulate General of Japan.

General Overview

Undergraduate Scholarship (Deadline: Application Received by June 4, 2021)

For students who wish to complete an undergraduate degree at a Japanese University.

For reference only, application guidelines (including eligibility requirements) and forms for the 2022 scholarship are available through the Study in Japan website.

Generally, application forms are available in April or May, each year with a deadline in May or early June. All eligible applicants will be invited for an interview and examination on a designated date in July.

Japanese Studies Scholarship (Application Closed)

*Eligibility requirements for the 2021 Japanese Studies Scholarship have been adjusted due to COVID-19. In lieu of a Japanese language examination, applicants are required to submit a copy of a Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) certificate.

For undergraduate university students interested in deepening their understanding of the Japanese language, culture and affairs. The scholarship aims to promote mutual understanding and friendly ties between Japan and other countries.

Application guidelines (including eligibility requirements) and forms for the 2021 Japanese Studies Scholarship are available through the Study in Japan website.

Generally, application forms are available in January, each year with a deadline in February or early March. All eligible applicants will be invited for an interview and Japanese language examination on a designated date in February or March.

Research Student Scholarship (Deadline: Application Received by May 12, 2021)

For university graduates who wish to study as research students. The research study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied or a related field.

For reference only, application guidelines (including eligibility requirements) and forms for the 2022 scholarship are available through the Study in Japan website

Generally, application forms are available in April or May, each year with a deadline in late May.
 
If an applicant successfully passes the written application screening, they are required to undertake an interview and examination (English and Japanese language) to be held on a designated date in mid-June to early-July.
