New Year’s Message from Consul General Hatori

2020/1/13
Consul General Hatori
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year!

2019 was a significant year. Last May, we observed the abdication of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and the Enthronement of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, signaling the commencement of the Reiwa era. Then in the summer, Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado visited Vancouver and Victoria. In addition, our Consulate celebrated the 130th anniversary of its founding in 1889.

Throughout the year, I renewed my appreciation for the depth of Japan and Canada’s relationship, thanks in part to the activities of Japanese and Japanese-Canadian businesses, but also to the grassroots activities by various groups including sister city relations. I have visited municipalities in British Columbia and Yukon (our Consulate’s jurisdiction) which maintain sister city relations with Japan, where I made courtesy calls on the local heads of government and met with local people who are vigorously promoting mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Canada.

2020 is the year of the long-awaited Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. I hope whether by traveling to Japan or through the media, people the world over will get a chance to experience Japan. Taking this good opportunity, our Consulate will further promote the charms of Japan.

I wish all of you a safe and pleasant New Year; I will strive with my staff to improve our consular service and strengthen the relationship between Japan and both British Columbia and Yukon in 2020.

Consul General of Japan in Vancouver
HATORI Takashi
