Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture The Golden Pavilion, Kinkakuji is now converted into a Zen temple since 1408. It was originally built by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as a retirement resort. The Golden Pavilion is located in the middle of a large pond, making a very impressive entrance to guests entering the building. The shogun used the building to entertain royalties and dignitaries to impress them. However, the building was burnt down numerous times and even as late as 1950 by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955 and been maintained regularly to keep the shine. by Roy Chan Burlington, Ontario |
