Lt. Robert Hampton Gray Monument Unveiling Ceremony
2021/8/8
Consul General Hatori paid tribute to Victoria Cross recipient Lt. Robert Hampton Gray for his courage as a wartime Canadian naval pilot and praised the subsequent thriving Japan-Canada bilateral relations in his message at a memorial unveiling ceremony on August 8.
Already honoured in Japan with a monument near the harbour of Onagawa, Miyagi prefecture, where he fought and died, this Canadian initiative brings to completion an effort to give similar tribute to his bravery and accomplishments on this side of the Pacific.
Over the years, multiple student visits from Onagawa to Hampton Gray’s hometown of Nelson and the generous donation of a work truck-from Nelson and Esquimalt to Onagawa following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011 have contributed greatly to the positive ongoing ties between Canada and Japan.
The memorial can be seen at the B.C. Aviation Museum in North Saanich on Vancouver Island.
