Greetings from Consul General
2022/10/6

Hello, everyone. It’s a pleasure to meet you.
My name is Kohei MARUYAMA. I have just arrived in Vancouver yesterday. I am very honoured to assume my duty as Consul General of Japan in Vancouver.
For the past six and a half years, I have been carrying out my official duties in Seoul and Busan, South Korea. I was impressed by the large number of my Korean acquaintances who not only congratulated me on my transfer to Vancouver, but told me that they had family living here, relatives who had migrated here, or that their acquaintances had started businesses in the city. I feel that this fact confirms the scale of the Asian community in Vancouver and its surrounding areas, as well as to its being the center of Canada’s west coast and a gateway to the Asia-Pacific. At the same time, I am reminded of the great contributions made by many Japanese Canadians and Japanese residents to the development of the region and to the advancement of Japan-Canada relations.
I begin my new assignment here just as the Canadian Government has decided to lift its COVID-related border and travel restrictions and pivot to a “living with COVID” policy. I intend to take a more proactive approach to various exchange projects and communications including cultural, personal, and economic exchanges, while paying due attention to COVID-19. Moving forward, I sincerely hope to receive advice from all of you, and do my best to strengthen these efforts. I am committed to working together with you to further the relationships that Japan has with BC and Yukon. In addition, the Consulate General of Japan will continue to endeavor to secure the safety and health of Japanese people and support their various activities. Please don’t hesitate to consult us when you need any assistance. I sincerely hope that you will continue to take an interest in our consulate’s initiatives, and ask for your advice and guidance.
I am looking forward to meeting you on a variety of occasions in the future, and am determined to take on new responsibilities. Thank you very much.
