Ceremony Confers Commendation from Japanese Foreign Minister to Mr. David Iwaasa 2023.01.31

On January 31, 2023, a ceremony to present the Foreign Minister of Japan’s Commendation to David Iwaasa, Board Chair of Tonari Gumi, was held at the official residence of the Consul General of Japan, Maruyama Kohei. The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients. As a board member of Tonari Gumi, a non-profit organization in Vancouver, Mr. Iwaasa continued to respond to the needs of the Nikkei community by helping seniors and others of various ages to lead healthy and independent lives. During the Great East Japan Earthquake, Mr. Iwaasa was one of the leaders of the Nikkei community who made a tremendous contribution by coordinating the fundraising and relief efforts of various organizations in the area. Mr. Iwaasa received this award in recognition of these achievements.

 

 

Consul General calls on President of Simon Fraser University 2023.01.30

On January 30, Consul General paid a courtesy call on Dr. Joy Johnson, President and Vice-Chancellor of Simon Fraser University (SFU), and exchanged views on furthering partnerships between Japan and SFU.

 

 

Consul General Maruyama calls on Mr. Dwayne McDonald Deputy Commissioner of RCMP 2023.01.27

On January 27, Consul General Maruyama paid a courtesy call on Mr. Dwayne McDonald Deputy Commissioner and Commanding Officer E-Division of RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) in Surrey.

On January 26, Consul General Maruyama paid a courtesy call on Chief of Vancouver Police Department Adam Palmer.


 

Consul General Maruyama attended the “Kenyukai” New Year’s Party 2023.01.25

On January 25th, Consul General Maruyama attended the New Year’s Party for “Kenyukai,” one of the Japanese groups that is active in the architecture, construction and building industries, where he talked with the members.
 

Consul General Maruyama participated in the online 2023 New Year’s Roundtable hosted by the Japanese Business Council of Vancouver 2023.01.24

On January 24th, Consul General Maruyama participated in the online “2023 New Year’s Roundtable” which was co-hosted by 10 organizations of the Japanese Business Council of Vancouver, in which he spoke about the future of Japan-Canada relations and the initiatives of the Consulate General.

 

 

Consul General Maruyama attended a New Year’s Party hosted by Vancouver Asahi Baseball Association 2023.01.22

On January 22, Consul General Maruyama participated in the Asahi Baseball Association’s New Year’s Party and the 101st birthday celebration of Mr. Kaye Kaminishi, the legendary baseball player. Consul General had great conversations with participants, including baseball players who are scheduled to tour Japan in March.

Consul General Maruyama had a discussion with  Dr. Yves Tiberghien, Director of Centre for Japanese Research, University of British Columbia 2023.01.20

On January 20th, Consul General Maruyama met with Dr. Yves Tiberghien , Director Emeritus of Institute of Asian Research and Director of Centre for Japanese Research, University of British Columbia (UBC) and exchanged views on strengthening relations between Japan and the University.

 
 

Consul General exchanged views with President of Royal Roads University 2023.01.19

On January 19, Consul General met with Dr. Philip Steenkamp, President and Vice-Chancellor of Royal Roads University, and exchanged views about furthering partnerships between Japan and Royal Roads University.

 

 

Consul General calls on Interim President of the University of British Columbia 2023.01.18  

On January 18, Consul General paid a courtesy call on Dr. Deborah Buszard, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia (UBC), and exchanged opinions about furthering partnerships between Japan and UBC.

 

 

Consul General calls on President of Langara College 2023.01.18 

On January 18, Consul General paid a courtesy call on Dr. Paula Burns, President and CEO of Langara College, and exchanged views about furthering partnerships between Japan and Langara College. Consul General participated in a campus tour led by student ambassadors.

Consul General Maruyama attended the opening of the play “Forgiveness” 2023.01.18

On January 18th, Consul General Maruyama was invited to an the opening reception of the play based on Mark Sakamoto’s celebrated memoir “Forgiveness” where he spoke with members of the production, including Mr. Sakamoto and Hiro Kanagawa, the Vancouver-based playwright and actor who adapted the book for the stage. Consul General Maruyama then saw the play.


 

Consul General Maruyama attended KAKEHASHI Project Dinner hosted by the City of Burnaby 2023.01.16

On January 16, Consul General attended a dinner hosted by the City of Burnaby to welcome Yokohama Jogakuin Senior High School students, who are visiting Canada on the KAKEHASHI Project. Consul General Maruyama had conversations with high school students, Burnaby City Council members, and the Burnaby Superintendent of Schools.


 

Consul General Maruyama attended New Year's Parties 2023.01.15

On January 15, Consul General visited Nanaimo and participated in a New Year's Party hosted by the Central Vancouver Island Japanese-Canadian Society (Seven Potatoes). Consul General Maruyama had great conversations with fellow participants. After that, Consul General Maruyama was invited to the Mochitsuki New Year's Party co-hosted by The Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society, Victoria Japanese Friendship Society, and Victoria Japanese Heritage Language School, where he met with participants.

Consul General Maruyama attends the New Year's Party of "Ohfukai" 2023.01.12

On January 12, Consul General Maruyama was invited to the New Year's party of "Ohfukai," one of the Japanese groups in the region, where he talked with the members.


 

Consul General Maruyama attends the Nikkei Community Joint New Year's Party 2023.01.07

On January 7, the Nikkei Community Joint New Year’s Party was held for the first time in three years at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre in Burnaby. The New Year’s party was attended by over 200 people. Consul General Maruyama led the toast and had conversations with many members of the Nikkei community.
