34th Annual BC Japanese Speech Contest Report
2022/3/5

On Saturday, March 5, the 34th Annual BC Japanese Speech Contest was jointly held by the Department of Asian Studies of UBC, the BC Japanese Speech Contest Organizing Committee, and the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver.
This year, 28 contestants (3 high school and 25 university students) from various regions throughout BC progressed from the preliminary screening to the final contest. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the contest was held in a reduced format but was live-streamed online to the public.
The judges praised all contestants for their fluent Japanese ability, commenting on the high caliber of form, vocabulary and content of the speeches. They acknowledged the entrants’ inspiring efforts to speak in a foreign language publically in spite of the difficult circumstances. All contestants received participation prizes and the winners of each category were awarded competitive prizes from sponsors.

The national contest will be viewable online this year again. Please check the Canadian National Japanese Speech Contest website for more details.
