32nd Annual BC Japanese Speech Contest (03/14/20)
2020/3/25

On Saturday, March 14 the 32nd Annual BC Japanese Speech Contest was jointly held at UBC’s Asian Centre by the contest’s organizing committee and the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver.
This year, thirty-seven contestants (ten high school and twenty-seven university students) from various regions throughout BC progressed from the preliminary screening to the final contest. In the midst of concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, entrance restrictions and other precautionary measures were taken, including closing the event to the public.
The judges praised all contestants’ speeches, commenting on how precise, rich in vocabulary and sophisticated in content they were. They lauded the successful results of the entrants’ studies. All participants received gifts from Japanese sister cities (Annaka, Chiba, Kushiro and Saitama) and the winners were awarded prizes from sponsors.
