Through, the 2017 “Kakehashi Project”, a two-way youth exchange program which aims to promote deeper mutual understanding between Japan and Canada, 15 students from Gleneagle and Centennial Secondary Schools in Coquitlam visited Japan from January 26 to February 3. During their stay, they visited Tokyo and Kyushu, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Canada in Japan and homestayed with families of students from Yahata and Genkai High Schools in Fukuoka Prefecture.
On February 15, a report session by the group was held at the residence of Consul General Okai. The students showed pictures and video clips they took from their trip for the guests who included Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, Superintendent of Schools for District No. 43 (Coquitlam) Patricia Gartland, as well as principals from participating schools. Each student shared their own unique Japanese experience.
Additionally, 18 students from Nakatsu High School in Gifu Prefecture will make their way to Canada in March to reciprocate the exchange and homestay with the same schools mentioned above.
