From October 3rd to 5th, Consul General Hatori and his wife Mrs. Hatori, visited the Hope District, the City of Kamloops and Ashcroft Village.
Firstly, while in Hope, Consul General Hatori dialoged with Councillor Craig Traun about the sister city relationship between Hope and Ito City in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. At the Sunshine Valley Tashme Museum, the Consul General and his wife were given a guided tour of the remnants of the Japanese-Canadian Internment Camp by Museum Curator Ryan Ellan.
The next stop in Kamloops took Consul General Hatori to Thompson River University (TRU) where TRU Associate Vice President Baihua Chadwick spoke about the school’s acceptance of international students—including those from Japan, and conversed with the Consul General about Japanese exchange students. What’s more, Consul General Hatori was able to meet with board members of the Kamloops Japanese Canadian Association.
Lastly, in Ashcroft Village, after making a courtesy call on Mayor Barbara Roden, Consul General Hatori and Mrs. Hatori participated in the Japanese Canadian Mosaics Unveiling Celebration, which commemorated the Japanese-Canadian internment camp built in Ashcroft during the Second World War.
