Speech from Mr. Donald Campbell, President of CJSBC
On July 16th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for Fiscal Year 2019. In British Columbia, The Canada-Japan Society of British Columbia has been awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendation for its contribution to the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and Canada.
On October 8th, Mr. Takashi Hatori, Consul General of Japan in Vancouver held a ceremony and reception for the commendation at his residence.
The Canada-Japan Society of British Columbia was established in 1928 as the "Vancouver Japan Society" with the aim of deepening the friendship and understanding between the two countries and accelerating the increase of trade between Japan and Canada (after that there were a few name changes to the Society).
In order to contribute to an improved business environment between both countries, the Society engages in activities like appearing in the House of Commons to promote the signing of a bilateral Economic Partnership agreement, and in addition, inviting leading private and public representatives to present at seminars organized by the Society.
Other Society ad hoc activities include, for example, the organization of a reception in 2004 celebrating the visit to Vancouver by Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado and hosting events where the Premier of British Columbia or his cabinet ministers are invited to speak.
Consul General Hatori congratulated the CJSBC for its acknowledgement by the Foreign Minister and deeply appreciates their efforts in strengthening economic relations between Canada Japan and Canada.
