Japanese Merchant Marine Training Vessel, ‘Kaiwo Maru’ Calls at Richmond

  The Kaiwo-Maru, a Japanese training vessel for merchant marine cadets called at Richmond from May 3^rd to 8^th at the invitation of the City of Richmond to celebrate the 150^th anniversary of Canada’s confederation. Consul General Okai attended the reception on board the Kaiwo-Maru hosted by Captain Umatani and the dinner reception hosted by Mayor Brodie of Richmond.  The Sail Drill, the major attraction at the “Ships to Shore - King of the Sea” festival which was held at Gary Point Park during the weekend, delighted a large crowd.  It was absolutely spectacular to see the Kaiwo-Maru, one of the world’s largest tall ships, under the blue sky with full sails on the four masts.
