2016 Statistics on the Japanese National Residing Overseas

On June 6th (Japan-time), the 2016 Statistics on the Japanese National Residing Overseas (summarized version) was officially announced. The document contains information on the number of current (as of 2015 October 1st) Japanese nationals residing overseas by country and establishments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs., as well as the number of overseas operating Nikkei companies (bases).
The document is created every year on October 1st to contribute to the protection of life and body as well as other safety issues of Japanese nationals abroad. It is created by using “residence reports” as standard documents since it is required by Passport Law that they submit it to their establishments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The purpose of the document is to comprehend the reality of the current situation of Japanese nationals residing overseas. Within the jurisdictional area of our Consulate there are 33,444 Japanese residents (5.5% increase from the previous year), resulting in 9th place of all overseas agencies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In whole Canada, 66,245 (4.7 % increase from the previous year).
Further, although it is not included in the Statistical document (summarized version), the number of permanent residents in our jurisdictional area amounted to 21,484 people (3.4% increase from the previous year) which is 64% of the entire Japanese population in the area and resulted in 2nd place of all overseas agencies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
