Regarding the Earthquake in the Kumamoto Area of Kumamoto Prefecture (Earthquake Relief Donations – New Update)

On April 16 2016, a powerful earthquake struck the Kumamoto area of Kumamoto Prefecture and caused severe damage in this region.
○ Donations to the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) through the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver
* To facilitate the transfer of donations to the Japanese Red Cross Society, the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver opened an account exclusively for this purpose. All donations received, will be sent directly to the Red Cross Society. Donations will eventually be sent to people living in the devastated areas. (If you wish to send your donation to the Government of Japan instead of the JRCS, please write “ATTN: Government of Japan” on the note portion of your cheque.)
*To receive a “Letter of Receipt for Donations,” send your cheque with an enclosed note indicating your first and last name or the name of your institution/organization, mailing address, and email address.
*Note that the Consulate General of Japan is a non-Canadian organization, according to the Canadian Federal Government and the provincial governments, in our jurisdiction; therefore, the Consulate General of Japan cannot issue official donation receipts that qualify for tax credits in Canada.”
Consulate General of Japan will end the fundraising on June 30th, 2016.
Cheques must be made payable to “Consulate General of Japan, Kumamoto EQ.” Please ensure the cheque is issued to the correct name before you send it.

In the meantime, the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) has established a bank account to accept monetary donations from outside of Japan, including Red Cross Societies, Red Crescent Societies, government offices, and members of the public.
Please note that the monetary donations that JRCS receives will be, in principal, taken as “international humanitarian aid.” They will be used for JRCS relief and recovery projects and activities for the affected area. They will not be used as a “cash grant”, which is money provided directly to affected local government offices through the cash disbursement committee.
