On February 25th, the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver held networking reception and musical performance to mark the 50th anniversary of sister-city relations between Yokohama and Vancouver and between Kushiro and Burnaby.

The invaluable ties that exist between the cities of Yokohama and Vancouver began in 1965.  Being the second largest city in Japan, Yokohama, in the prefecture of Kanagawa, is a sister-city and a sister-seaport with Vancouver.  Kushiro on the northern island of Hokkaido, twinned with Burnaby that same year as both cities shared geographic and structure similarities.

Since their inception, these sister-city relationships have been well supported by individuals, local community groups, city officials and staff.  To commemorate the milestone this year, the cities are working together in developing festivities and exchanges throughout 2015 to further enhance city partnerships and international grassroots exchanges.
The celebration and meeting organized by the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver on February 25th featured a musical performance presented by the Pacific North Trio, an ensemble headed by VSO Associate Concertmaster Emeritus, Akira Nagai in collaboration with Seri Nagai and Keiko Alexander.  This event was attended by elected city officials, city staff and representatives from groups organizing golden jubilee events.
