On January 29, Consul General HATORI Takashi and his wife hosted the Birthday Celebration for His Majesty The Emperor, which was attended by some 330 guests including, BC Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Lisa BEARE, Canada Parliament Members, BC MLAs and government officials, Japan-Canada business members, representatives of the Japanese-Canadian community and Japanese expat community, as well as individuals involved in educational and cultural fields.

Following an opening performance of both countries' national anthems by NAV Chorus, speeches were given by Consul General HATORI and BC Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Lisa BEARE, and a toast was offered by Jim KOJIMA.

Photos of Their Majesties' official activities were exhibited and a video was shown. In addition to the consulate’s own Japanese cultural information table, many guests enjoyed a demonstration of Japanese cuisine, a booth run by Japanese municipality Gifu Prefecture, and tables set up by companies such as Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Air Canada, as well as flower arrangements designed by the local Sogetsu, Sangetsu and Ikenobo schools of ikebana.
