The Grant to the Government of Canada
with Respect to Tsunami Debris Deriving from
the Great East Japan Earthquake

March 13, 2013

In March 2013, the Government of Japan exchanged diplomatic notes with the Government of Canada to extend an ex gratia grant of approximately one million Canadian dollars to the Government of Canada which, together with individual Canadians, gave tremendous support to Japan in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The grant is intended to demonstrate the goodwill of the Japanese people and government with respect to communities on the west coast of Canada, which are or will be affected by tsunami debris resulting from the Great East Japan Earthquake.

On March 13th, 2013, in Vancouver, the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment of Canada and Mr. Seiji Okada, Consul General of Japan in Vancouver, with the presence of Mr. Terry Lake, British Columbia Minister of Environment, jointly announced the extension of the grant by the Government of Japan and the acceptance of the grant by the Government of Canada.
