In a certain town of hills, Ohba Minako begins her day running up and down its steep slopes delivering milk, after which she goes to her job as a supermarket cashier. She is 50, single. In one of the houses to which she delivers milk, there lives a man with whom she has secretly been in love with since high school.

At 8:30 p.m. Dog in a Sidecar
Kaoru lives in Tokyo. Her younger brother, Toru, is getting married, and she skips work and goes fishing for the day. She helps a little girl bait her hook, and she is reminded of her relationship with Yoko, the woman who came into her life after her mother walked out on the family twenty years earlier.
The short story “Dog in a Sidecar” was published in a literary magazine; it was nominated for the Japanese famous literary prize “Akutagawa Prize” in 2001.
