Calligraphy Lecture and Demonstration with Kataoka ShikoOn Monday, February 25, the Consulate General of Japan, Keifukai Calligraphy Association and UBC Asian Library hosted an evening with renowned calligrapher Kataoka Shiko. The event was part of the Consulate General of Japan’s 125th Anniversary celebrations.
Ms. Kataoka, President of the Keifukai Calligraphy Association and Member of the Japan Academy of Arts, demonstrated her calligraphy skills by completing several pieces before an audience of about 60 people. Before the demonstration, Dr. Sonja Arntzen, explained about Ms. Kataoka’s art work and provided insight into her connection to Vancouver and UBC. Dr. Arntzen has collaborate on several exhibition with Ms. Kataoka, and is currently a professor emerita of Classical Japanese Literature at the University of Toronto.
After the lecture and demonstration, the audience were invited to ask questions and take a closer look at the calligraphy pieces of Ms. Kataoka.
