MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships

 

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers Undergraduate, Japanese Studies and Research Student Scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities.


Call for applications:

  • 2018 Japanese Studies Scholarship
    Candidate interviews and examinations will be held in early to mid-March on a date determined by the Consulate General of Japan. Interviews and examinations must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan’s offices.

Detailed information about each scholarship, including application forms, guides and eligibility requirements, is available from the Embassy of Japan. (Note: For any questions on the application documents, where you are allowed to answer in Japanese, please also include an English translation.)


General Overview


Undergraduate Scholarship (Application Closed)


For students who wish to complete an undergraduate degree at a Japanese University.


For reference purposes only, application guidelines and forms for the 2018 Japanese Studies Scholarship are available through the Embassy of Japan's website.


Future application forms will be available in late March or early April, each year with a deadline in May. All eligible applicants will be invited for an interview and examination on a designated date in late June or sometime in July.

Japanese Studies Scholarship (Deadline: Received at the Consulate General of Japan by February 28)


For undergraduate university students interested in deepening their understanding of the Japanese language, culture and affairs. The scholarship aims to promote mutual understanding and friendly ties between Japan and other countries.


Application guidelines and forms for the 2018 scholarship are available through the Embassy of Japan's website.


Future application forms will be available in January, each year with a deadline in early March. All eligible applicants will be invited for an interview and Japanese language examination on a designated date in March.

Research Student Scholarship (Application Closed)
For university graduates who wish to study as research students. The research study area should be the same field that the applicant has studied or a related field.


For reference purposes only, application guidelines and forms for the 2018 Japanese Studies Scholarship are available through the Embassy of Japan's website.  


Future application forms will be available in late March or early April, each year with a deadline in May.

 

If an applicant successfully passes the written application screening, they are required to undertake an interview and examination (English and Japanese language) to be held on a designated date in mid-June to early-July.

Notes:

  • Use the guide and forms for the scholarship year for which you are applying. They are subject to change each year.
  • Applications are only accepted at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate General in the country where the applicant has citizenship (i.e. Japanese Embassy/Consulate's General in Canada can only accept applications from Canadian citizens.). Send your completed application to your nearest Embassy or Consulate General of Japan.
